A 13-year-old boy drowned in a check dam near Thirupuvanam here on Saturday.
Police said, Mohammad Tahir, 13, of Pudur in Thirupuvanam, was a grade eight student of the government higher secondary school.
He, along with his friends, went to bathe in the Vaigai river at Ladanenthal.
It is said, as he went into a deeper section of the water, he was unable to return to the shore. As his friends saw him drown, they informed the elders.
The Manamadurai Fire and Rescue Service personnel rushed to the spot and searched for several hours to retrieve the body.
Thirupuvanam police have registered a case and further investigation is underway.
