Bengaluru Metro witnessed a close call on Monday morning when a security guard accidentally fell onto the metro track at the newly opened Raggigudda station on the Yellow Line. The incident occurred at around 11.10 a.m. on August 25.
According to officials of the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the guard was on duty at platform number 2 when he slipped and fell on the electrified track. Another security guard on duty at platform number 1 immediately activated the Emergency Trip Switch (ETS), cutting off power to the track. A passenger also rushed forward to help the fallen guard back onto the platform.
Speaking to The Hindu, a BMRCL official said, “An incoming train was halted, and services were briefly disrupted for about six minutes as a safety measure. The 52-year-old security guard did not suffer any injuries and is safe.”
Another BMRCL source told The Hindu that the guard had been on duty for nearly 16 hours with only a short rest before reporting back to work. Following the incident, the guard was relieved from duty, and an internal inquiry has been initiated to determine how such extended shifts were allowed. The station manager has also been questioned regarding the this issue.
Meanwhile, recently BMRCL installed new safety barricades at R..V. Road interchange station on August 20 to manage the surge in passengers on the recently launched Yellow Line. R.V. Road is now the second metro station in the city, after Majestic, to be equipped with such railings to prevent accidental falls onto the tracks.
