A team of Army personnel handed over a memento and a letter of appreciation on Monday to the family of Major Mariappan Saravanan, who laid down his life during the Kargil war in 1999.

The memento and the letter of appreciation from the General Officer Commanding of the Indian Army’s 8 Mountain Division was handed over to Major Saravanan’s sister Dr. Chitra Senthil Kumar in Tiruchi. The Army team offered floral tributes to the portrait of Major Saravanan kept at the residence of his sister.

It was given as a mark of respect and gratitude for the supreme sacrifice made by Major Saravanan, who laid down his life in defence of the nation during the Kargil war. The memento was given in connection with the 26th year of the Kargil Vijay Diwas, which is celebrated every year on July 26 to mark India’s victory over Pakistan and to honour the bravery of the soldiers who had sacrificed their lives during the war.
