A young woman was shot dead by a man in West Bengal’s Krishnanagar city’s Manikpara area on Monday (August 25, 2025). The 18-year-old victim was shot in front of her family members as the perpetrator fled the crime scene, leaving behind a blood-laden body of the woman lying inside her own home.
The teenage woman, Ishita Mallick and the primary suspect, Debraj Singh, in his mid-20s, knew each other before the incident, according to the Krishnanagar Police officials. After the attack, Mallick was rushed to the Nadia District Hospital in Shaktinagar, where she was declared dead on arrival.
“The incident occurred under the Kotwali Police Station in Krishnanagar. No one has been arrested till now, but the prime suspect is Debraj Singh, a man who knew the victim from Kachrapara, where Mallick used to go for her studies,” Makwana Meetkumar Sanjaykumar, Additional Superintendent of Krishnanagar District Police, told The Hindu. He also added that an investigation is on the way, and they are hoping to catch the perpetrator soon.
Mr. Singh was reportedly a resident of Kachrapara. Krishnanagar police have already informed the police near Mr. Singh’s residence and are searching for him.
The incident occurred around 2 p.m. when the suspect came inside the woman’s house and shot her at point-blank range, said police.
The mother of the victim said that she found two bullets lying inside their home. “I want them to find the man and hang him because he took away my daughter,” the mother told media persons. She also said that her daughter had just passed out of school a few months back.
The brother and mother of the victim were present in the house when she was murdered. Their father was out at work. Mother of the victim said that when she saw the man inside their house, she asked him to leave but he opened fired on her daughter.
The motive of the murder has not yet been determined, but a relationship feud may have been one of the causes, according to initial investigation.
Panic spread in the area as locals gathered around the victim’s house as news spread in the area.
