A five-year-old boy sustained multiple injuries after being attacked by a stray dog inside a police colony in east Delhi’s Shakarpur, an officer said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday when the boy and his father had gone to meet their relatives in the residential area.

The officer added that the dog suddenly pounced on the boy and bit him multiple times on the arms and legs. “Hearing the boy’s screams, an Inspector rushed to the spot, freed the child from the dog’s grip, and rushed him to a hospital. The child has received deep wounds on his limbs,” he said. The victim has been admitted to a hospital where he is receiving treatment.

The attack comes days after the Supreme Court modified its suo motu August 11 order asking civic authorities in Delhi and the National Capital Region to capture all stray dogs and confine them to shelter homes away from public places within six to eight weeks.

On August 22, the apex court termed its earlier order “too harsh” and directed that the animals be released into the localities from which they were captured after undergoing sterilisation, deworming, and immunisation. The three-judge Bench noted that the earlier mandate was intended to protect citizens from attacks by “aggressive and rabid” canines.
