Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) has been awarded Level 2 Accreditation under the Airports Council International (ACI) Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation programme.
The Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) on Thursday (August 28, 2025) said that the Level 2 Accreditation makes KIA the first airport in India and among a select group of airports globally to reach this milestone.
“This recognition highlights the airport’s commitment to building a truly inclusive travel environment — where infrastructure, technology, and human touch come together to empower every traveller,” BIAL said.
Dedicated accessibility committee
Awarded under the Accessibility Enhancement Accreditation (AEA) programme, the world’s only initiative dedicated to benchmarking and advancing accessibility in aviation, this programme by ACI assesses airports on facilities, services, and governance, recognising continuous improvements that embed accessibility into strategies, policies, and passenger experiences.
BIAL said that at the airport, accessibility is embedded into the very fabric of operations, shaping how the airport plans, designs, and delivers its services. A dedicated accessibility committee (including the airport stakeholders) steers initiatives that enhance facilities, services, and mobility solutions for Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRMs) and Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
“These efforts are reinforced through continuous staff training to provide empathetic and personalised assistance, alongside ongoing infrastructure upgrades that ensure the journey through the airport is smoother, safer, and more dignified for every traveller. Beyond compliance, the approach reflects KIA’s belief in creating a universally inclusive environment where travel is a seamless experience for all,” BIAL said.
Furthering its accessibility framework
Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer, Bangalore International Airport Ltd said, “We are honoured to be awarded the Level 2 Accreditation under ACI’s Airport Accessibility Enhancement programme. At KIA, accessibility is not just a measure of infrastructure, but a reflection of our belief that travel should be inclusive, seamless, and experiential for every passenger. This milestone is the result of the tireless dedication of our entire team and the invaluable guidance from ACI, reinforcing our vision of building an airport that truly serves everyone.”
BIAL further said that building on its accessibility framework, KIA has introduced initiatives such as the Sunflower Lanyard scheme in 2022, supporting travellers with hidden disabilities, and launched a dedicated sensory room for neurodivergent passengers, the first of its kind at an Indian airport, to create a calming space that eases their journey.
