Tamil Nadu was the top State in terms of the number of factories and persons employed in the manufacturing sector, according to the results of the Annual Survey of Industries (ASI) 2023-24 released by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) on Wednesday (August 27, 2025).
As per the survey, a total of 1,95,89,131 persons were engaged in factories across India, of which Tamil Nadu accounted for 15.24%. The States that followed Tamil Nadu in this category were Gujarat (13.07%), Maharashtra (12.95%), Uttar Pradesh (8.30%), and Karnataka (6.29%).
Out of 2,60,061 factories across India, Tamil Nadu topped the list, being home to 15.43% of them, followed by Gujarat (12.81%), Maharashtra (10.20%), Uttar Pradesh (8.51%), and Andhra Pradesh (6.16%). The State stood in third position in terms of Fixed Capital (8.09%), Output (10.11%), and Gross Value Added (10.26%).
In a post on X, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa said the State is not just the fastest-growing economy but also has the largest industrial workforce in India. “This is the best rebuttal to the politically-motivated falsehoods being spread by the opposition and the questions raised by a few of them.”
He also pointed out that the data was compiled not by the Tamil Nadu government but by the Government of India. He said that investment promotion by the Department of Industries continues to focus on jobs for Tamil Nadu. The State remains both the talent capital and the manufacturing capital of India, he added.
