The Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam (TVS), affiliated with the Communist Party of India, has condemned the ‘foisting’ of case against farmers who staged a demonstration in front of the District Collectorate in support of their demands on August 11.
In a statement issued on August 27, the association State General Secretary, P. Masilamani, said that normally police permission would be obtained for a pre-planned demonstrations. But on some occasions when the police permission was not granted, the demonstrations would be held as planned.
Further, on certain occasions when the long pending demands of farmers remained unattended, demonstrations would be organised by the farmers either at the halls or at the venue where grievance meetings were convened by the District Collector or Revenue Divisional Officers.
Such being the practice throughout the State, a case has been ‘foisted’ on a group of farmers who staged a demonstration in front of the District Collectorate on August 11 when they submitted a memorandum highlighting the non-desilting of irrigation channels in Melattur area.
Though their sudden protest demonstration did not cause any hindrance to either the functioning of the offices at the Collectorate or to the movement of public, Mr. Masilamani alleged the Vallam Police Sub-Division senior officials have ensured that a case had been booked against the TVS members for organising a demonstration near the District Collectorate without obtaining necessary police permission.
Terming the police action as ‘vindictive’, Mr. Masilamani said such actions would only cripple the voice of farmers in future.
