From a medical standpoint, Madras is the healthcare capital of India, and specifically the diabetes care capital of the country, says R.M. Anjana, consultant and managing director, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, Chennai.

The first diabetes clinic was started here in 1948 and this is where speciality diabetes care in India was born. From that starting point, Chennai has now grown to establish expertise in precision diabetology, diabetes complications, genetics, nutrition and all research related to diabetes – Chennai has put diabetes research on the world map. Chennai is also proud of its well-established medical colleges, which have trained generations of students in organised and specialised healthcare delivery.

The other aspect about Chennai that needs celebrating is its unique culture. I can think of Bharatanatyam, which is integral to our culture, and, from a doctor’s point of view, is also a great form of physical activity, especially for women! We also have the second-longest urban beach in the world, making for healthy and happy exercising!

Finally, I believe Chennai is a traditional city, one that holds on to its culture strongly and proudly. This is definitely something to celebrate as well!
