The Anti-methane Project Federation has urged the State government to publicise the findings of the Sultan Ahmed Ismail Committee on exploration and extraction of hydrocarbon in the State.
Addressing the media at Ammaiyappan near Tiruvarur on Saturday, federation’s chief coordinator T. Jayaraman said although the previous AIADMK government had passed a law declaring the delta region as a protected agriculture zone, extraction activities continued. The law banned new projects and was not applicable to the then ongoing exploration projects at the time of the enactment.
As soon as the new government was formed in 2021, Mr. Jayaraman said a high-level expert committee on exploration and extraction of hyrdrocarbon projects headed by soil biologist and ecologist Sultan Ahmed Ismail was constituted and the committee had submitted its report within a year.
However, the findings of the report were yet to be made public by the government, he regretted and urged the government to place the findings in public domain.
Earlier, he addressed a meeting on Cauvery delta and climate change at Ammaiyappan organised jointly by the Poovulagin Nanbargal, ExNoRa International, Rotary Club of Tiruvarur and Veludaiyar Educational Institutions.
