An arduous effort put in by the Virudhunagar district police to nab a gang that robbed a gold chain from a teacher in Amathur resulted in prevention of a revenge murder in Hosur.
Incidentally, the police enquiry revealed that the same gang was involved in a house- break in at Rajakkamangalam in Kanniyakumari district during which the accused had stolen a swanky SUV.
Virudhunagar district Superintendent of Police D. Kannan had brought the the Madurai-Tirunelveli highway under strict vigil after a car-borne gang snatched the chain of a teacher, Nagarani of O. Sankaralingapuram under Amathur police station limits on August 28.
The accused, who were travelling in a new car without number plates, waylaid the teacher and robbed six sovereigns of gold, two mobile phones and ₹1,500.
Different police teams were deployed to track the car.
Even as the police were rummaging through video footages from the vicinity of the crime and along the Madurai-Tirunelveli highway, the team got a clue as they found the car had entered Virudhunagar district after passing through the Kappalur toll gate before striking the teacher.
However, after the crime, the vehicle had bypassed the toll-gates in Sattur and Kayathar.
The police then tracked down the vehicle and the owner.
Meanwhile, the police got information that the vehicle had passed Sattur toll gate towards Madurai on Friday.
A team of police already present at Kappalur toll gate laid a trap and nabbed the accused, who attempted to escape from the scene.
The police identified the accused as Balakumar, 29, of Tiruchi, Ajithkumar, 28, of Salem and Suresh, 21, of Tirunelveli.
The police also seized a gold chain, gold ring, pendant, four wrist watches, mobile phones, three iron rods and six machete along with the car.
Interrogations revealed that the accused were proceeding to Hosur to take revenge for a double murder reported in Hosur.
Besides, the enquiry revealed that three of their accomplices had driven away the stolen SUV from Kanniyakumari district.
Efforts are on to secure the other accused.
