Bagalkot police in Karnataka have booked a minor boy under provisions of POCSO Act. He face the charge of raping a 16-year-old girl in June 2025.

The Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (KSCPCR) has directed the district child welfare committee to provide necessary protection and care to the girl who is two months pregnant.

The boy and girl were in a residential school in Bagalkot district. The boy invited the girl to a family function where the alleged offence was committed, police said. A team led by Sub-inspector Mallikarjun Sattigoudar is investigating the case.

Shashidhar Kosambe, commission-member, said the commission would register a suo moto case regarding the incident. “I spoke to Bagalkot Superintendent of Police Siddarth Goel. I asked him to produce the accused and the girl before the Juvenile Justice board. The accused is a child in conflict with the law. But he is 17 years old now. As per the Juvenile Justice Act, if a POCSO accused is above 16 years, he can be tried in a normal court, if the board feels that he has done it with knowledge and volition. We are trying to see that this case serves as a precedent,” Mr Kosambe said.
