The Geographical Indication (GI) logo for Manapparai Murukku was released in Thanjavur on Monday, September 1.
The logo contained the image of the murukku, a hand-made snack using rice dough at Manapparai in Tiruchi distirct. It enjoys consumer patronage not only inland, but also from the Tamil diaspora, especially in Southeast Asian and Gulf countries.
Application of GI tag for the product was submitted by the murukku manufacturers in 2014 and was granted the recognition in 2023.
Releasing the logo for the product in Thanjavur, GI attorney P. Sanjai Gandhi said the GI logo would protect the cottage industry from marketers of ‘spurious manapparai murukku’ products since the use of the logo or marketing of ‘murukku’ manufactured at a place other than the Manapparai region would attract legal proceedings.
