Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Y.S. Sharmila Reddy paid tributes at ‘YSR Samadhi’ in Idupulapaya of Kadapa district on Tuesday (September 02), marking the 16th death anniversary of her father and former Chief Minister Late Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy.
She also paid rich tributes to the families of the 700 persons who died of shock in the aftermath of the demise of their favourite leader.
After an overnight stay in Kadapa on Monday, Ms. Sharmila reached YSR Samadhi on Tuesday morning along with her family members and offered garlands. She later sat in silence for a few minutes and prayed for peace.
Recalling her father’s life as a ‘marvellous piece of history’, she recalled how he had etched a place for himself in every heart in the State by introducing novel schemes meant for every section of the society such as women, students, farmers and the deprived.
She also recalled that the ‘Aryogyasri’ scheme had saved thousands of lives and the free power introduced for farmers brought down the farmer suicide rate, while the fee reimbursement scheme for students brought education to the reach of the downtrodden and resurrected careers for the aspiring youth.
Annamayya project
Meanwhile, Ms. Sharmila flayed the erstwhile YSR Congress regime and the present NDA Alliance government for neglecting the Annamayya project that got washed away five years back.
Though 39 persons perished in the mishap and five villages washed away, not a single rupee was paid as compensation till date, she rued.
The APCC president squarely blamed the sand mafia for resorting to indiscriminate mining in the reservoir area, which led to the mishap.
“The then Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy announced a high-level committee in the Assembly to probe the matter and offered to rebuild the project with ₹800 crore, but not an inch of progress has been achieved so far,” she fumed.
Similarly, she gave vent to her ire on the NDA regime for promising to repair the project with ₹340 crore within a year of coming to power, but to no avail.
On behalf of the Congress party, she demanded that the government restore the project which, she said, would provide irrigation water to 30000 acres and quench the thirst of one lakh residents of villages in the vicinity.
