In the backdrop of a 50% tariff levied by the United States on Indian exports to that country, a three-month-long ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat Sankalp Abhiyan’ (self-reliant India resolution campaign) will be launched on September 25 in States ruled by the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) to motivate people to buy locally made goods.
The campaign will begin on the birth anniversary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay, and culminate on December 25, the birth anniversary of the late former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Organisations working in different sectors, including industry and trade, will be roped in. Events to spread public awareness will be organised in coordination with social organisations, influencers, and celebrities.

On May 12, 2020, while announcing a special, comprehensive economic package of ₹20 lakh crore to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the first time called for the Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan. The campaign’s aim was to make the country and its citizens independent and self-reliant in all sectors, Mr. Modi said.
Over the years, the Union government launched a series of programmes for modernisation, and capacity/skill-building, alongside various reforms, with the objective of achieving self-reliance. Mr. Modi has frequently advocated ‘vocal for local’ at public meetings and speeches, particularly ahead of the festive season every year.
In his monthly ‘Mann ki Baat’ radio address of August 31, the PM again urged people to take pride in “swadeshi” (made in India) products. India should follow one mantra — ‘vocal for local’; one path — ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India); and one goal — ‘Viksit Bharat’ (developed India), Mr. Modi said. Stating that everything needed in life should be “swadeshi”, especially during the coming festivals, the PM reiterated his recent appeal for the country to become self-reliant.
