Employees of APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU) finally heaved a sigh of relief after the Syndicate meeting on Tuesday approved the university’s annual Budget for 2025-26.

The decision paved the way for the immediate disbursal of salaries and pensions that had been withheld for the past two months.

The Syndicate ratified the Budget estimates of ₹14,334.24 lakh. This includes allocations of ₹7,164.04 lakh for non-Plan expenditure, ₹1,203.50 lakh for Plan expenditure, ₹580.45 lakh under earmarked funds and ₹5,386.25 lakh towards debt deposits and advances.

BoG’s approval

Following the Syndicate decision, Vice-Chancellor (V-C) in-charge K. Sivaprasad exercised his special powers under Section 14(6) of the University Act to sanction the anticipated expenditure from July until the Board of Governors (BoG) grants final approval to the Budget. The order enabled the release of staff salaries, pensions and Onam bonuses on Tuesday.

Syndicate members observed that such a step could have been taken earlier by the V-C to avoid the financial hardship faced by the employees.

Sources said the meeting also resolved to recommend the reappointment of former Registrar A. Praveen and former Controller of Examinations Ananda Resmi R., who had earlier been relieved from service upon completion of their deputation. The decision will now be forwarded to the government for further steps.

The move for reappointments had earlier sparked a confrontation between the V-C and Syndicate members after the former refused to accept a similar decision previously. Dr. Sivaprasad stood firm on his stance then, despite the Higher Education department giving its approval for the reappointments.
