The representatives of nearly 45 of the 71 apartment complexes located along Thevara-Perandoor and Edappally canals that came under the scanner of the Kerala State Pollution Control Board for not having adequate wastewater treatment facilities have submitted an undertaking seeking a reasonable time to ensure compliance.
The Board had asked the erring units to submit an affidavit along with resolutions in the case of companies/societies stating that they required a reasonable time to install sewage treatment plants (STPs), besides seeking the mandatory consent to operate the facility.
The notice issued by the Board had also quoted the order dated August 8, 2025, of the Kerala High Court, which had taken a serious view of the pollution of the canals caused by the absence of proper wastewater treatment facilities in the erring units.
The Board officials said that they would update the court about the feedback received from the associations of apartment complexes at the next hearing of the case on September 8. The list of apartments that had not yet responded to the directive would also be made public, they said.
According to the Board’s notice, apartments that are yet to install STPs have to submit an online application to obtain the Board’s consent to operate with a proposal for setting up the facility. The proposal must include the capacity of the plant along with the design calculation and the expected characteristics of the treated water.
The units having space constraints were told to check the feasibility of installing the plants in the existing space. The Board had also suggested that such units initiate alternative arrangements for the transfer of sewage to common sewage treatment plants having valid approvals from it.
