A regional workshop for strengthening cooperatives in Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh was conducted here on Wednesday by the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Telangana Regional Office, Hyderabad, in association with the Union Ministry of Cooperation, as well as the Cooperation Department.
Joint Secretary to the Ministry, Siddharth Jain, underscored the role of cooperatives in fostering rural prosperity, enhancing food security and catalysing inclusive growth.
NABARD Chairman Shaji K V, who addressed the workshop virtually, said the primary agricultural credit societies (PACS) computerisation project has shown encouraging progress at the national level. The digital backbone created through computerisation will enable the PACS to expand business models, venture into e-marketing and provide digital services to rural communities. Business process re-engineering and integration with higher-tier cooperative institutions and core banking systems will streamline operations, eliminate duplication and promote efficiency and financial inclusion.
Formation of new multipurpose PACS, scaling operations of existing PACSI MPACS, accelerating construction of grain storage infrastructure in cooperatives and computerisation of PACS were discussed, NABARD said in a release.
