Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Thursday said the government was committed to spending more for the education sector considering the vital role education plays in the development of a region.
Participating in Teachers’ Day celebrations organised by the Education department at Kamarajar Manimandapam on East Coast Road, the Chief Minister said education played a major role in the progress of a nation.
“Our government has taken several steps to improve quality of education in schools. The introduction of 10% reservation for government school students in medical admission has proved beneficial to many children from marginalised sections of society. So far, 72 government school students got admission in medical colleges after introducing the quota system,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Home and Education A. Namassivayam said this year’s Class 10 and 12 results have proved the critics of the government wrong. “We were criticised by the Opposition for introducing CBSE in government schools. But the results showed that with proper training government schools can also achieve good results. While 42 government schools secured centum results in Class 10 exam, 9 schools secured centum pass in Class 12 after pursuing CBSE syllabus,” he said.
The government was able to fill most of the vacancies in teaching posts, evolve a transfer policy and give long delayed promotions to deserving teachers in the last four years, he said. Several teachers were given awards for their meritorious service in government schools. Speaker R. Selvam and Chief Secretary Sharath Chauhan were also present.
