The chief of a locality of a central Mizoram town has set an example by imposing a penalty on his son for tossing a cigarette butt out of the window of his room.
About 100 km south of the State’s capital, Aizawl, Serchhip aspires to beat Saitual as the cleanest district headquarters in Mizoram. The district is also named Serchhip.
On August 28, the president of the town’s Chhim Veng (locality) issued a notice to his son after neighbours saw him throw the cigarette butt. The son was directed to pay a fine of ₹20 to the area’s treasurer, according to a community resolution.

The penalty was meagre, but was seen as a disciplinary action in line with the stringent cleanliness rules of the town, which happens to be the Assembly constituency of Chief Minister Lalduhoma.
Mizoram’s Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Department has been conducting an urban cleanliness contest since 2017. Community participation has been the hallmark of this contest, which has helped increase awareness of sanitation and waste management.
