Demand grows for new taluk police station in Mayiladuthurai

With the district’s population and infrastructure expanding, residents and activists are demanding that Mayiladuthurai Town Police Station be supplemented with a separate taluk police station.

While a town police station already functions, residents contend its jurisdiction and workload have grown significantly in recent years. “Kumbakonam, which is not even a district headquarters, has a town and a taluk police station. In Mayiladuthurai, every issue — passport verifications, petitions, civil disputes, protests, and law and order bandobust — lands at a single station. The burden is overwhelming,” said social activist Tamilan Ganesan.

According to him, a taluk police station would help cover the upcoming new bus stand at Manakkudi, the Collector’s office, and other major facilities. It would also augment the staff strength in the district police department, he said.

Police officers acknowledge the pressure. “There are eight stations in the Mayiladuthurai sub-division and another eight in Sirkazhi sub-division. But the headquarters needs additional capacity. With new infrastructure coming up, manpower is insufficient,” said a senior officer.

Residents have sought an upgrade in the town’s traffic wing, pointing out that at present only a sub-inspector handles traffic. “An Inspector-level post is necessary to manage the growing vehicular volume,” a local trader said.

A senior officer at the Superintendent of Police’s office said options were being studied. “Alongside the town–taluk split, another possibility is to divide the jurisdiction into East and West police stations. These are under active review,” he said.
