Twelve new bridges were constructed in various locations under Greater Chennai Corporation in the last four years at a total cost of ₹283.67 crore.
An official with the Bridges Department stated that the twelve bridges were open to public for use now and expected to serve an average of 1.8 million people daily within the Corporation area. “Each project was undertaken in areas identified facing significant traffic congestion,” the official said.
The twelve completed bridges are Mayor Chittibabu Bridge at Villivakkam Railway Crossing, Chengai Sivam Bridge on Stephenson Road, Elephant Gate Flyover at Royapuram, Bojarajan Nagar subway, additional bridge on Arunachalam Road over Cooum River, Thyagaraya Nagar skywalk, Amullavoyal Bridge across Puzhal surplus canal, Manali Burma Nagar Bridge across Puzhal surplus canal, Aspirant Garden Bridge across Otteri Nallah, pedestrian iron bridge over Nungambakkam subway, Jeevan Nagar Bridge at Alandur, and box-type bridge over Kodungaiyur canal.
Two other bridges — the M.K.B Nagar Bridge and Vaidhiyanathan Bridge at Tondiarpet — were refurbished at a cost of ₹6.92 crore. The structures such as skywalks, underpasses and vehicular subways were included to assist movement. Upgrades including lighting, drainage and accessibility were also provided, the official said.
