Rona Maria Sunil, an INSPIRE (Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research) fellow at the Advanced Centre for Atmospheric Radar Research (ACARR), Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat), has won the Best Student Paper Award at the International Union of Radio Science (URSI) conference held in Sydney, Australia, from August 17 to 22.
She presented her research on developing a novel dynamical index to track and predict the onset of the Indian summer monsoon using radar remote sensing, according to a release.
This innovative approach, developed under the research guidance of Dr. M.G. Manoj, Scientist-D, and enhanced through machine learning with the support of Dr. Kavya Johny at ACARR, offers the ability to predict the monsoon onset 3–4 weeks in advance with an accuracy of ±3 days, the release said.
