Five persons were booked by Kurusilapattu police in Tirupattur on Saturday for running an illegal mobile sex determination test unit in the district.

Police said suspects were identified as G. Sugumar (67), V. Manikandan (45), S. Kavitha (40), R. Ilavarasi (35) and C. Kanaga (53). Kanaga is a nurse from Salem and remaining members of the gang, who belong to Tirupattur district, were working as agents in running a mobile sex determination test and abortion unit.

Initial inquiry revealed that except the agent Kavitha, who was arrested, other gang members are still absconding. All of them were booked under Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act, 1971, by Kurusilapattu police in Tirupattur.

Tirupattur Superintendent of Police V. Shyamala Devi has formed special teams to nab the suspects. Investigations found that two expectant mothers, who are aged 31 and 23 years respectively, had gone to Salem where nurse Kanaga conducted an illegal sex determination test and found both were baby girls.

As the women already have two children each, they allegedly sought the help of Kanaga for abortion. Subsequently, the gang took them to Kavitha’s house in Tirupattur. Based on alert, police conducted the surprise check at the house where they rescued the two pregnant women and arrested Kavitha. The other four fled the spot. The women were admitted to Government Taluk Hospital in Tirupattur town. A probe is underway.
