West Bengal government and the State’s School Service Commission (SSC) have made elaborate arrangements on Sunday (September 7, 2025) for statewide examination on Sunday (September 7, 2025) for the recruitment of teachers.
The examination is being held in the backdrop of a teacher recruitment scam which has rocked the politics of West Bengal for the past three years. The Supreme Court, earlier this year, on April 3, annulled the appointment of about 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff whose recruitment was carried out in 2016.
State Chief Secretary Manoj Pant on Saturday (September 6, 2025) held a meeting with District Magistrates on the examination scheduled on Sunday (September 7, 2025) and directed the officials that the examination must be held as per SSC guidelines.
SSC chairperson Siddharth Majumdar said that about 5.65 lakh candidates will appear in the examination for recruitment of teachers in two categories – class IX and class X and class XI and XII.
The SSC has recently released a notification to fill 35,726 teaching posts in State-run secondary and higher secondary schools across the State. Of these vacancies, 23,212 posts are for classes IX and X, and 12,514 are for classes XI- XII.
“About 3.19 lakh candidates will take the exam on Sunday (September 7, 2025) for appointment as teachers for class IX and class X. There will be separate security features for each question paper. There will also be a facility to scan the admit card. All the exam centres are sensitive to us. No one will be able to leave until the exam is over.” Mr. Majumdar said.
The remaining 2.5 lakh candidates will write the examination for teachers’ vacancies in the category of teachers for class XI and class XII on September 14. The number of centres for September 14 examination is 478.
State Education Minister Bratya Basu on Saturday (September 6, 2025) wished the candidates on social media. He wrote that the administration is working to ensure security and transparency at 636 centres so that the candidates can take the exam without any problems
The untainted teachers whose appointments were annulled by the Supreme Court will also appear in the examination. The Supreme Court had directed that the ‘tainted’ candidates would not appear in the examination. At the directions of the Apex court, the SSC had come out with a list of about 1806 ‘tainted’ candidates who cannot appear in the examination.
