The Tiruppur district administration has announced that the farmers’ grievance day meeting pertaining to August will be held on September 10 (Wednesday).
The meeting that should have taken place on August 29 was not held due to “administrative” reasons, official sources said.
The rescheduling of the meeting was conveyed to farmers at the start of this month.
The announcement about the rescheduled date came in the wake of the farmers’ expressing disappointment over what they termed as “abrupt” cancellation of the meeting that was meant to have taken place.
The farmers have, in another communication, been instructed to furnish registration details of their association with the Agriculture Department before September 15.
The particulars of registration/ renewal of registration, and names of the functionaries must be furnished before September 15, it said.
Representatives of registered farmers’ associations are accorded priority to convey the grievances at the meeting. Expressing disappointment, the farmers had questioned the rationale behind the cancellation of the meeting.
The July meeting was marked by a face-off among groups of farmers during a discussion on the distribution of water through the Parambikulam Aliyar Project (PA) main canal. Currently, water is being supplied for cultivation in fourth zone.
Farmers had been awaiting the outcome of the grievances over a plethora of issues, including the supposed shortcomings in water distribution in the tail-end of PAP main canal, opposition to the Irugur-Devangonthi pipeline project of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, inam land, and compensation for livestock killed by street dogs.
