Amrit Varsha, the year-long 75th anniversary celebrations of Ramakrishna Mission in Mangaluru will start with a four-day programme from September 11.
The first three days will be the annual ‘Shraddha’, ‘Medha’ and ‘Prajna’ programmes for post graduate students, teachers and professional course students, respectively, from September 11 to September 13.
On September 14, there will be an inauguration of the new Amrita Bhavan. Swami Jitakamananda, the Secretary of Ramakrishna Mission, Mangaluru, told reporters on Monday (September 8, 2025) that for long over 150 students were being given free tuitions, at an old building in the Ramakrishna Mutt premises. These students will be moving to eight classrooms built for the purpose on the first floor of the Amrita Bhavan. The hall on the ground floor of Amrita Bhavan will be used for programmes and events related to children, he said.
The Amrita Bhavan will be inaugurated by Swami Suhitanandaji Maharaj, the Vice President of Ramakrishna Mutt and Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Mutt, Howrah, West Bengal, at 10 a.m. MP Captain Brijesh Chowta, MLC Manjunath and Chancellor of Nitte (Deemed to be University) N. Vinaya Hegde, will take part.
There will be Santavani programme by Pandit Anand Bhate, the disciple of Pandit Bhimsen Joshi, at 2 p.m., he said.
Mix of spiritual programmes and social campaigns
The seer said that the Ramakrishna Mission opened its Mangaluru unit in 1951 when it took over the running of Balakashrama, which was started by Venkatesh Pai, in August 1951. The Mission ran a dispensary to treat patients in the vicinity for few years from 1953.
The Mission was not only conducting programmes for spiritual enlightment, but also involved in holding campaigns for clearing waste, holding Yakshanga, music and other cultural programmes, and holding personality development and capacity building programmes for students and teachers.
During the year-long celebrations, the Mission will hold monthly programmes on the themes related to activities it has been involved in. The Mission will resume holding ‘cleanliness drive’ on Sundays in different localities of the city, he said.
Former MLC Ganesh Karnik also spoke at the event.
