Police and NDRF personnel recovered the body of an 18-year-old youth who drowned in the Malaprabha river in Yadoga village near Khanapur in Belagavi district on Monday.
The body of Shubham Kuppatagiri had been washed away during Ganesh idol immersion on Saturday. Officers managed to retrieve the body after a 48-hour search.
He had entered the riverbed to immerse his family idol. However, due to high water flow in the river, he got caught in a whirlpool and drowned. Despite being a swimmer, he could not save himself.
Officers from Khanapur and Nandagad police stations and NDRF officers were involved in the search for the body with the assistance of local fishermen.
The body was handed over to the family after post-mortem.
