The Mangaluru police have arrested two persons accused in a case related to communal trouble. They had failed to appear before the jurisdictional court for more than 26 years.

Leeladhar, 52 and Chandrahas Keshav Shetty,58, were named as ‘absconding-accused’ in the chargesheet filed by Mulki police in connection to a communal riot in Haleyangady in December 1998. The case was registered for offences under Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (rioting), 148, 436 and 427 of Indian Penal Code.

The Senior Civil Judge and JMFC court,Moodbidri, declared it as long-pending case and issued a non-bailable warrant.

On a tip-off, the police raided a house in Kemral village of Mulki, and arrested Leeladhar, who rented the place. Similarly, Chandrahas Shetty was taken to custody soon after he arrived at the Mangaluru airport from Mumbai. They were produced before the Moodbidri court, which remanded them in 14 days of judicial custody.

For having violated orders of the court, separate cases were registered by the Mulki police against the two for offences under Sections 208 and 209 of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
