A 33-year-old man, riding a pillion on a motorcycle, died after he fell from the motorcycle into a roadside pit near Manchi on the Manipal-Alevoor Road in Udupi on Sunday.
The Manipal police said the deceased Mohan was riding pillion on the motorcycle that his friend Pradeep was riding. Pradeep did not have a valid driving license, and he was in an inebriated condition. Despite knowing the risk of riding a motorcycle after consuming alcohol, Pradeep allegedly rode in a rash and negligent manner on the road.
Around 2 a.m. Pradeep lost control while coming downhill on the road. The motorcycle veered to the left and hit a roadside tree. Mohan fell into the pit and died. Pradeep abandoned the vehicle and escaped. The police searched for and arrested him.
Manipal police booked Pradeep under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. He was produced before the jurisdictional magistrate, who remanded Pradeep to 14 days of judicial custody
