Concrete Day celebrated at AU, world’s tallest bridge discussed

The Indian Concrete Institute (ICI), Vizag centre, in collaboration with the department of Civil Engineering, Andhra University, celebrated Concrete Day on Monday.

Retired Indian Railways chief engineer, Ankala Sai Baba delivered a lecture titled “Building the World’s Tallest Rail Bridge in a Challenging Environment.”

During his lecture, he presented the design, construction and maintenance of the Noney Bridge, in Manipur, which features the world’s tallest railway pier.

The bridge, which stands at a height of 141 meters is part of the Jiribam-Imphal railway line project. It is designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 250kmph and for earthquake loads corresponding to seismic Zone -5. Mr Sai Baba highlighted the complexities of concreting in cold climatic conditions.

Prof. C.N.V. Satyanarayana Reddy, Civil Engineering department head and chairman of the ICI Vizag centre, emphasised the engineering significance of the tallest bridge .

Prof. K. Rambabu, registrar, Andhra University, appreciated ICI for organising the lecture and exposing faculty, practising engineers and students to the real-world challenges in infrastructure development.
