The commuters of the Yellow Line of Namma Metro, which has been grappling with overcrowding due to the limited availability of trains, are likely to get relief soon.

The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) is planning a fourth train set, currently undergoing trials, to be pressed into commercial operations by the end of the week.

The train arrived at the Hebbagodi depot on August 12 from the manufacturing unit of Titagarh Rail Systems Limited in Kolkata. “The new train set is being tested for seamless operation with the existing signalling, telecommunication, and power supply systems,” a BMRCL official explained.

The Yellow Line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 10 and opened for public the next day. However, services began with only three trains, resulting in long intervals of over 25 minutes between trips. This limited availability has resulted in passengers facing heavy crowds in the stations.

“The addition of a fourth train is expected to marginally reduce waiting time, but a larger fleet will be necessary to achieve the desired frequency like the existing purple and green lines,” the official added.

The 18.82-km Yellow Line connects R.V. Road in south Bengaluru to Bommasandra, linking residential areas and the bustling Electronics City industrial hub.

On August 11, a day after the Yellow Line began operations, the Namma Metro recorded its highest-ever daily ridership, with 10.48 lakh passenger boardings across all operational lines.
