The BJP MLAs of Dakshina Kannada said on Tuesday they will be forced to come to the streets if the government did not respond positively to the plea of stakeholders of Tulu, Yakshagana theatres to allow night performances in the district.

Speaking at the “janagraha” convention organised by Tulunada Dharmika Samskritika Vaibhava Samrakshana Samithi and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in the city, D. Vedavyasa Kamath, Mangaluru City South MLA, said that a meeting involving the stakeholders, the police, and the Deputy Commissioner will be convened within two days to apprise the government authorities on the difficulties being faced by the stakeholders.

Citing an incident, the MLA said that police took away the sound system, at about 6 p.m., when Sri Krishna vesha competition was under progress at Urwa Stores recently “on the guise of sound pollution.” Later, disappointed parents called him up to inform him about the incident.

Y. Bharat Shetty, Mangaluru City North MLA, said that restrictions imposed on night performances poses the question of survival of the “culture” of the coastal belt. Dramas and Yakshaganas upheld moral values.

Rajesh Naik U., Bantwal MLA, said that the economy of the district revolved around the activities of Tulu and Yakshagana theatres. The performances provided direct and indirect employment to many.

Bhagirathi Murulya, Sullia MLA, said that bureaucrats should have a feel for the cultural tradition of the region. Only such bureaucrats who hailed from the coastal region could understand the cultural ethos better than others.
