Farmers in Theni district on Tuesday staged a protest by dumping paddy on the road. They complained about the issues in the direct purchase centre in Melmangalam near Periyakulam in Theni district,
The harvested paddy was brought to the DPC. Since it was a temporary centre, there was no proper facility for the storage of paddy. The paddy was lying in the open and was getting spoiled, the farmers complained.
For over 20 days it was lying there. Since there was no protection, the paddy started changing colour and getting spoiled. Due to this the officials refused to accept the paddy. The farmers staged a protest expressing their disappointment. Jayamangalam police held talks with the farmers. They dispersed after it was assured that the issue would be looked into.
The officials at the DPC said paddy was being procured as per guidelines. Due to variations in moisture content and other reasons, it was not procured. The centre functions during harvest season and priority is given on a first come first serve basis and due to this there was a delay for some farmers. they said.
