Several people were injured and vehicles damaged after supporters of two regional political parties clashed in western Assam’s Kokrajhar, one of five districts in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), where elections to a tribal council are scheduled on September 22.

Tension gripped a few villages in the Baukhungri constituency on September 9 after clashes broke out between supporters of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF).

Baukhungri is one of 40 constituencies of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC), which governs the BTR. The UPPL rules the council in alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party and the regional Gana Suraksha Party.

The first incident was reported in the Tintila area around 10 p.m., when BPF workers allegedly attacked and injured a few supporters of the UPPL. Two vehicles used by the UPPL were also damaged.

Around 1:30 a.m., some 200 UPPL supporters reportedly attacked the office of the BPF at Nayekgaon, damaging three vehicles and injuring a few workers. Leaders of both parties demanded action against each other’s workers.

“We are inquiring into the clashes and have heightened security in the area to prevent further clashes,” a police officer said.

The UPPL’s Ranjit Kumar Basumatary and the BPF’s Dhaneswar Goyari are the two main candidates in Baukhungri.
