Charlie Kirk, one of the most prominent conservative figures in the U.S., was shot dead on Wednesday (September 10, 2025) while addressing a large outdoor crowd on the Utah Valley University campus in Orem. The 31-year-old was the co-founder of the conservative youth organisation ‘Turning Point USA’ and was one of the most influential voices in Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’ (MAGA) movement.

Kirk, who was also a podcast host, openly supported Christian nationalist ideas and frequently stirred controversy with his remarks on topics such as gender, race, religion, and politics.

At one point, he had argued that the cost of annual gun-related deaths was justified in order to preserve the Second Amendment, which he viewed as essential to “protect our other God-given rights.” It may be noted that Kirk was in the middle of a heated exchange with a questioner at Utah Valley University, discussing who is responsible for gun violence, when the fatal shot was fired.

He gained recognition for actively engaging in debates with progressives and inviting audiences to question his political views, thereby challenging his ideas.

Kirk lived in Scottsdale, Arizona, and is survived by his wife Erika, a former Miss Arizona USA beauty pageant winner, and their two children.

Kirk’s early life and his influence on campuses

Kirk was raised in a well-off area in Illinois. His mother worked as a counselor in a mental health clinic, while his father was an architect. He pursued a path in politics rather than enrolling in higher studies, despite being accepted into a University.

At the age of 18, he helped launch ‘Turning Point USA’, an organisation created to push back against liberal ideas on college campuses and promote conservative values. With him at the helm, the group became known for aggressively opposing what it labeled as “leftist propaganda” and calling out professors it claimed were spreading those views in classrooms. He later went on to frequently host bold and confrontational Q&A sessions at universities, inviting debate and controversy. These debates became instrumental in driving youth support for Trump in the November 2024 election.

In its first year, the movement brought in over $75,000, quickly gaining influence within national lobbying circles. This early success helped Kirk position himself as an emerging political figure.

After co-founding Turning Point USA in 2012 with conservative activist Bill Montgomery, Kirk also expanded his efforts by launching Turning Point Action in 2019—a nonprofit focused on supporting conservative political candidates. Turning Point USA extended its reach by organizing events, rallies, and campus tours to promote Kirk’s message across colleges nationwide.

Kirk’s appearances on college campuses often sparked protests, including the one at Utah State University, where he was ultimately killed. His event in Utah faced backlash, with thousands signing online petitions in an attempt to have it cancelled.

Today, the organisation operates on over 850 college campuses, where it works to register student voters and host conservative speakers for campus events.

Kirk played a key role in rallying young voters behind President Donald Trump. Through his work with Turning Point USA, he brought a new generation of right-wing youth and gained international attention for his efforts in shaping the conservative movement.

Kirk endorsed Mr. Trump in 2016 by travelling with him during the campaign, and in the same year, he also debuted at the Republican National Convention and became the youngest speaker. He went on to speak again at the convention in 2020 and 2024. It is also said that Kirk played an important role in helping Trump return to the White House in his second stint.

In 2022, Kirk was called to testify before the January 6th Committee following allegations from a “Stop the Steal” movement that Turning Point Action, the political arm of his organization, had funded $1.25 million to transport attendees by bus. During the testimony, Kirk invoked the Fifth Amendment more than 70 times. A representative for Turning Point Action later stated that the group had only arranged seven buses to transport around 350 college students.

Kirk remained steadfast in his support for Trump during his time out of the political spotlight, playing a key role in his return to office. He’s also recognized for turning conservative donor support into an effective grassroots network, an effort many credit with contributing to Trump’s success in flipping Arizona in the 2024 election.

Being a loyal Trump supporter, Kirk backed unproven claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen by Joe Biden. He also played a role in circulating misleading information about COVID-19 and the vaccines. In addition, he was widely criticized for making openly bad remarks toward both the LGBTQ+ and Muslim communities.

Kirk believed in an America-first agenda, denied the climate-change crisis, attacked racial theory, called white privilege a myth, and levelled criticism at George Floyd, the man whose 2020 death at the hands of Minneapolis police ignited nationwide protests.

Kirk, as a podcaster, had 5.3 million followers on his X account and drew an audience of more than 500,000 monthly listeners to podcasts of his radio program, “The Charlie Kirk Show.”
