CM seeks Centre’s help in setting up YIIRS and strengthening education sector with ₹30,000 crore

Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has urged Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to extend the Central government’s support to Telangana which launched a series of measures to strengthen the education sector for providing quality education to students of marginalised communities.

The Chief Minister explained about the highlights of the Young India Integrated Residential Schools proposed by the State government for providing quality education to all sections, especially BC, SC, ST and minority communities. The schools are being constructed in 105 assembly constituencies spread across the State with an estimated 2,560 students from Class V to XII in each school.

The proposed schools would accommodate 2.7 lakh students and would serve as education hubs for government schools nearby indirectly benefitting lakhs of students. The Chief Minister made the request when he called on the Union Finance Minister in Parliament on Tuesday. The construction of 105 schools equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, laboratories and stadiums would require ₹21,000 crore and another ₹9,000 crore was proposed to be spent on providing modern labs and other infrastructure in junior, degree, technical and higher education institutions taking the total expenditure to ₹30,000 crore.

Mr. Revanth Reddy accordingly requested Ms. Nirmala Sitharaman to exempt the loans through the special purpose centre being established for the integrated schools from the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management norms considering the expenditure on development of education sector as an investment on human resource development.

Ms. Sitharaman appreciated the initiative by the Telangana government and asked the Chief Minister to provide details about the proposed SPC.
