The Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner, M. Sivaguru Prabakaran, inspected various activities at the Vellalore dump yard on Tuesday as part of efforts to review solid waste management works at the site.
During the inspection, the Commissioner reviewed plantation works being carried out within the premises. He also examined composting facilities, including windrow composting with a capacity of up to 600 tonnes per day and vermicomposting units handling about 100 tonnes per day. The handling of dry and recyclable waste, with a processing capacity of around 250 tonnes per day, was also assessed.
The inspection further covered Phase II of the biomining process, which is being implemented to clear accumulated legacy waste at the dump yard. As of December 31, 2025, a total of 2,25,559.33 tonnes of legacy waste had been scientifically processed.
According to Corporation data, biomining carried out till December 2025 resulted in the disposal of 11,900.26 tonnes of bio soil, 1,42,974.7 tonnes of coarse soil, 7,090.6 tonnes of stones, 41,164.93 tonnes of refuse-derived fuel, and 3,645.95 tonnes of other materials.
The Commissioner instructed officials to ensure that composting and biomining activities are carried out as per norms and that segregation and processing of waste are strengthened on a regular basis.
He also directed officials to take fire-prevention measures in view of the coming summer and to consider steps such as additional watch towers and surveillance cameras for monitoring the site.
