Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy on Sunday accused the Congress of selectively targeting the Election Commission (EC) and other constitutional institutions for political gains, alleging that the party questions the electoral process whenever it loses an election.
Addressing a press conference at BJP State headquarters here, Mr. Kishan Reddy said Congress accepted the EC and electronic voting machines (EVMs) when it won elections in Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana, but raised doubts about the institutions when the BJP emerged victorious in other States.
“I strongly condemn the baseless allegations being made by Rahul Gandhi and the Congress against the Election Commission and other constitutional institutions,” he said.
Referring to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, he said the exercise was being carried out under the orders and supervision of the Supreme Court. Removing names of deceased persons and duplicate entries and correcting incorrect details were part of the process of maintaining electoral rolls, he said. He alleged that the Congress had taken different positions on the exercise in Kerala and West Bengal.
“The Election Commission is not responsible for making the Congress win elections, nor are EVMs responsible for making Rahul Gandhi the Prime Minister,” Mr. Kishan Reddy said.
On the alleged differences among the Election Commissioners, Mr. Kishan Reddy said internal discussions and correspondence were normal in a democracy. He said the three Election Commissioners had clarified that there were no differences among them and there was no need to create a controversy over the issue.
