Palpitations should never be ignored as a minor problem, as they can sometimes serve as an early warning sign of serious and potentially life‑threatening heart conditions,” said Dr. A. Suresh, electrophysiologist and senior interventional cardiologist at Medicover Hospitals.
Palpitations refer to a sensation where the heart suddenly beats fast, strong, irregular, or feels like it skips a beat. Although palpitations lasting from a few seconds to a few minutes are often harmless, they may also indicate serious cardiac issues such as arrhythmia, atrial fibrillation, or ventricular tachycardia, he told media persons, here, on Friday (December 12, 2025).
Lifestyle factors like stress, excessive physical strain, caffeine intake, thyroid disorders, anaemia, fluctuations in blood pressure, hypoglycemia, and electrolyte imbalances can trigger palpitations. Experts also noted that during pregnancy, increased blood volume and hormonal changes can lead to frequent palpitations.
“If palpitations are accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, severe fatigue, fainting, unusually fast or irregular heartbeat, or a sustained heart rate above 120, one must immediately consult a doctor and undergo evaluation,” Dr. Suresh said.
Doctors commonly perform ECG, 2D Echo, Holter monitoring, and blood tests for thyroid function, electrolytes, and haemoglobin to diagnose palpitations. Lifestyle adjustments such as stress reduction, adequate sleep, and yoga can help provide relief.
Dr. Suresh also emphasised that if a heart attack occurs, receiving treatment within the first three hours is crucial. Failing to do so can cause permanent damage to the heart muscles, increasing the risk of palpitations in the future.
Dr. Arun Kumar, Medicover Unit Head advised that recurring palpitations, palpitations with breathlessness, dizziness, or chest pain should never be ignored and must be evaluated by a cardiology specialist immediately.
