A Scheduled Caste woman, K. Mahalakshmi, was given a free house-site patta and a pension order on Monday under the provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, following the murder of her daughter, Kamali, by her husband and his family members in 2025.
Virudhunagar Collector Sharanya Ari handed over the patta and pension order to Ms. Mahalakshmi at Collectorate during weekly grievance redress meeting.
Kamali had married John Gilbert, who belonged to the Backward Class community, in 2020. The couple had a four-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, Kamali was murdered by her in-laws in February 2025.
Following the murder, the Tenkasi police arrested five persons, including her husband, in connection with the murder and under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front had demanded that the State government provide a house-site patta and pension to the mother of the deceased.
