Kerala Congress working chairman and former Union Minister P.C. Thomas has called for the construction of an airport in Kuttanad, stating that the region has the potential to be developed into one of the best tourist destinations in the country. He said the State government should place the demand before the Union government.
Mr. Thomas said on Saturday (December 27, 2025) that Kuttanad was the only region in India located below sea level and such landscapes were rare globally giving the area a unique identity marked by natural beauty and distinct features. He noted that Kuttanad played a major role in paddy cultivation and contributed significantly to the State’s agrarian economy.
Mr. Thomas said infrastructure development in Kuttanad should be planned with a long-term vision. He suggested projects such as an airport, a metro rail line connecting Alappuzha and Changanassery, a water metro covering the Kuttanad water network, and the establishment of flower and fish parks, along with other basic infrastructure facilities, to promote tourism and overall development in the region.
