Panel to recommend reviving student body election

Student union elections that have been banned for over three decades in Karnataka are being sought to be revived by the Congress government.

A nine-member committee has been formed to recommend ways to hold student body elections in the State through which new leaders could be identified. The panel that will have Ministers M.C. Sudhakar and Sharan Prakash Patil, MLCs Saleem Ahmed and Puttanna, besides former Youth Congress presidents and NSUI presidents, will submit a report to the government, Deputy Chief Minister and KPCC President D.K. Shivakumar said on Sunday.

Speaking at the Congress Foundation Day, Mr. Shivakkumar said that the current crop of leaders, including himself, came to politics through student body elections. “Later when violence during the student body elections surged, it was stopped”.
