Appealing to the Union government to name Madurai Airport after NMR Subbaraman, freedom fighter and a respected leader, speakers at the Tamil Nadu Sourashtra Political Awakening conference – 2025 also urged the Election Commission of India to declare Paramakudi Assembly segment in the general category on Sunday.

The speakers said that Subbaraman was fondly called as ‘Madurai Gandhi’ for his simplicity and philanthropy to the needy and economically weaker sections.

Naming Madurai Airport after Subbaraman would be apt and a fitting tribute to the late leader.

The speakers including KRM Kishore Kumar, M.K. Jawahar Bapu, K.K. Dinesh among others said that the Sourashtrians had been known for their contributions to the society in very many ways over the last six decades. It was time to get recognition for the community in political arena and with the elections to the Assembly fast approaching, they stressed the significance in electoral battle.
