Bengaluru South City Corporation Commissioner K.N. Ramesh on Friday clarified that the residents of Jayanagar, where a smart parking system is scheduled to be implemented, need not pay parking fees for parking vehicles in front of their homes.

The south corporation was the first among the corporations to propose a smart parking system. However, local residents and traders had been seeking clarity on parking on residential streets. This system is separate from the proposed Greater Bengaluru Parking (Rules), 2026, which plans annual residential parking charges ranging from ₹15,000 to ₹30,000 based on the type of the car.

Mr. Ramesh said the system, expected to be implemented soon, would cover select major commercial roads in Jayanagar. The move is aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving parking management. Parking fees on these roads would be levied only between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., he said.

The Jayanagar Traders’ Association had also raised concerns over the proposed parking policy and sought a reduction in parking charges and free parking for the first 30 minutes.

Mr. Ramesh said the corporation would assess the practical advantages and disadvantages of the requests before taking a decision.

Under the technology-driven initiative, the selected major roads will be equipped with CCTV surveillance, mobile app-based real-time information on parking availability, and variable message signboards. The system would help motorists locate designated parking spaces without having to drive around in search of parking and curb unauthorised parking.

The commissioner urged traders and shoppers to cooperate with the initiative, citing its necessity to improve traffic management in the area.
