The ice cream plant, which is being built by the Tiruchi District Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union (Aavin) on its premises at Kottapattu on the Tiruchi-Pudukottai Highway is set to start production in a few weeks.
Aavin sells ice cream at its parlours, super markets, and kiosks. Since it does not have a dedicated plant for producing ice cream, Aavin sources ice cream products from its Madurai plant.
Since it was projected that the revenue from the sale of ice cream products will go up sharply, the Tiruchi Aavin mooted a proposal to build a dedicated ice cream plant. A sum of ₹43.41 crore was earmarked for the project. It sourced funds under the Dairy Processing and Infrastructure Development Fund.
The construction work began about three years ago. It was expected that the construction work would be over by December last. However, it could complete only the civil work and it could not complete the plant and machinery work as per schedule.
Sources told The Hindu that the erection of plant and machinery had reached its final stage. About 95% of the work was over. The plant was in a position to start production anytime from now. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin was expected to inaugurate the plant through video conference. It had been decided to start production of curd. The plant was equipped to produce 1,500 litres of curd daily. Production of ice cream would begin one week after the inauguration.
The ice cream plant would be adding value to the Tiruchi Aavin. Once production starts, the Tiruchi plant would be in a position to market almost all types of dairy products on its own without depending upon other sources.
The ice cream plant was equipped with an ingredient preparation section, refrigeration units, freezing equipment, and packing unit. The plant would be equipped to produce all types of ice creams with different tastes and flavour. Its bouquet of dairy products will include kulfi, candy, buttermilk, and lassi.
