Virudhunagar District Collector Sharanya Ari on Wednesday inspected the solid waste management facilities at Rajapalayam municipality.
The inspection was part of an initiative to meet the people of Rajapalayam taluk and to know their grievances under Ungalai Thedi Ungal Ooril scheme that would be conclude on Thursday morning.
Ms. Sharanya visited the sewage treatment plant, compost yard where manure is being produced by the municipality.
She said that the STP was treating the sewage being generated by the three zones of the municipality on a sprawling 11.36 square km. It has a capacity to treat 21.85 MLD of sewage and would meet the need of Rajapalayam municipality’s population upto 2050.
The 42 wards of Rajapalayam municipality that have got got 47,497 residential buildings and 5,876 commercial buildings produce 48.5 tonnes of garbage every day. This includes 26.84 tonnes of biodegradable waste and 21.66 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste. The biodegradable waste is dumped into the compost yard and turned into manure and supplied to the farmers. The non-biodegradable waste is handed over to the industrial units, the Collector said.
Later, she inspected the underconstruction Knowledge Centre by the Rajapalayam municipality. The facility coming up at a cost of ₹2.15 crore will help the job aspirants prepare for competitive examinations and also benefit the general public.
Ms. Sharanya also inspected the six godwons hired by Tamil Nadu Civil Supplies Corporation. Each godown has a capacity to stock 7,400 tonnes of foodgrains. The godowns have various varieties of rice stocked.
The Collector received petitions from the members of the public and listened to their grievances at the municipal office. She handed over hearing-aid to three persons and foldable cane to two persons at a cost of ₹22,000.
The Collector inspected the Urban Primary Health Care Centre, Agricultural Regulated Market and inspected the noon meal distributed to the students at Seithur Sevugapandian Government Higher Secondary School.
District Revenue Officer Ananthi, Project Director, DRDA, Vanathi, Sivakasi Sub-Collector Mohammed Irfan, TNCSC Regional Manager Palpandi, Rajapalayam Municipal Commissioner (in-charge) Kannan, were among those who were present.
