Over 150 village level workers or ‘Makkal Nala Paniyalargal’ association members on Wednesday were detained for trying to stage a protest across Dindigul city urging the State government to fulfil their set of demands. Despite promising that the demands would be met, it was not being done so, the workers said.
The workers were detained by the police for blocking the road and trying to engage in a sit-in protest at various places in the city. The workers were involved in implementing the government schemes and ensuring that the people in the rural areas received the benefits, they said.
The workers urged the State government to fulfil their set of demands. The service should be regularised and periodical pay should be ensured, they said. The workers said that DMK in its poll promise said that service would be regularised and made permanent. It should be implemented as per the promise made, they demanded.
They also demanded that adequate relief measures should be provided for the families of deceased employees and appointments should be made on compassionate grounds. Pension should be paid to the workers, they said.
Though several petitions and representations were submitted to the authorities, the demands were not met, they said. Therefore, the members said that they had decided to stage the protest to draw the attention of the authorities. However, police personnel deployed across Dindigul city detained them.
