The State Transport Department employees affiliated to the Centre for Indian Trade Unions (CITU) has demanded that the State government settle the pension dues pending for more than two years, and also implement the wage agreement for the working employees.
The CITU employees have been staging an indefinite sit-in from August 18 in various depots across the city and State.
Payment of arrears
A. Soundararajan, State president of CITU, at a press conference held in the Vadapalani bus depot on Monday, demanded that Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar settle the pension dues of 3,500 employees who retired two years ago.
He also called for the payment of arrears for the employees of dearness allowance, and the implementation of the pension scheme for those who joined after April 2003, as per the election manifesto of the DMK.
Mr. Soundararajan further said the employees had been staging a peaceful sit-in without affecting bus operations in the State.
Protest to continue
While welcoming the State government allocation of ₹1,137 crore to the retiring employees from July 2023 to April 2024, he said the protest would continue until the government sets a deadline to fulfil their other demands.
