A 32-year-old wage labourer was arrested by Ambur Taluk police in Tirupattur on Wednesday for killing his wife over a family dispute.

Police said that the arrested person was identified as B. Sathyaraj, a native of Thottalam village near Ambur town. He lived with his wife and four children.

Initial inquiry revealed that Mr. Sathyaraj was married to S. Sumathi (27) in the village eight years ago. He worked as a wage labourer in Ambur and Vaniyambadi towns and visited home during weekends.

During the pandemic, Mr. Sathyaraj could not find enough work and got addicted to alcohol. The couple used to fight over his alcohol habit. On Wednesday, the couple got into an argument over Mr. Sathyaraj being unable to find work. Angered over it, the man took a kitchen knife and slit his wife’s throat.

Neighbours and relatives rushed to the house immediately and shifted the victim to the Government Medical College Hospital in Vellore, where doctors said she was brought dead. A case was registered. The man was arrested and lodged at Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is underway.
